In 2002, the Egyptian Government declared 7,800 square km in and around the Siwa Oasis a protected area. The status prohibits all activities that can potentially damage or deplete the natural environment and its resources. This includes the preservation of indigenous flora and fauna present in the oasis. This declaration has supported the movement towards respecting and protecting Siwa’s invaluable natural resources.
