This limestone hill is home to over 700 Roman tombs and four 26th Dynasty tombs carved into the rock. Some 90 percent of these tombs remain unexcavated despite a history of vandalism and theft. In times of insecurity, Siwans had been known to seek refuge in these caves, avoiding the invasions of World War II. The view from the mountaintop provides a terrific panorama of the oasis and the 26th Dynasty tombs feature well-maintained mural drawings open to the public.
